Access Statement For Tantallon House B&B Gilsland

Introduction

We aim to cater for the needs of all visitors in our home based three-bedroom bed and breakfast. The following statement is a summary of our provision. If you have any specific questions please feel free to call us and we will endeavour to help.

Pre-Arrival

• You can contact us via phone or email (details below).
• Menus for breakfast can be provided in large print by prior arrangement. We explain to guests in detail what is available.
• We have a basic website.
• The access statement is available on the website. We can forward the statement to you by post in large font if you require.
• There is a 685 bus service from Newcastle and Carlisle to Gilsland. The bus stop is in the centre of the village. The AD122 Hadrian’s Wall Bus, which follows the line of Hadrian’s Wall and stops at the main towns of Brampton, Haltwhistle, and Hexham, will stop outside our house. You need to ask the driver and state the house is about 400 metres west of Gilsland Village.
• The main towns of Brampton are about 7 miles from us and Haltwhistle, about 6 miles. These are accessible by the AD 122 bus from our house.
• By special arrangement we can meet guests in Haltwhistle or provide you with the local taxi numbers.
• The nearest shop-mobility scheme is in Carlisle.

Arrival & Car Parking Facilities

• There is ample car parking on the side of the house.
• We can offer assistance from the car parking area to the main entrance of the house.
• There is a flatish area to the side of the house which we can reserve for you. The surface is partly gravel and partly paving slabs.
• The contact number for the house is not shown on the outside of the house.
• We can accommodate guide dogs by previous arrangement and dog bowls.
• We have no special signage nor intercom. The door bell is on the side of the front door.
• By special prior arrangement, there is an alternative level access through the rear part of the house.
• We can offer assistance from the car parking area to the front door of the house.
• From the car parking area, there is a slightly sloping concreted path 5 metres long leading onto a grassed path to the front of the house. This grassed path slopes down and then slopes up over a distance of 15 metres. There is a 75mm step up onto a small area 1300mm long by 1100 wide directly in front of the front door. Then, there is a 150mm step into the main hall. There is a 40mm wooden door threshold on the line of the front door.
• There is an automatic light for the concrete path but this will not come on if you are in a wheelchair. There are automatic lights for the grassed path. There is no specific light over the front door entrance.
• There is a pull bell set 1400mm above the outside paved area.

Main Entrance & Reception

• There are no steps in the reception hall.
• The hall has ceramic tiles.
• There are no loop systems and no background music.
• We can provide a pad/pen on arrival.
• The front door width is 900mm with doors generally 950mm wide.
• Lighting in the hall is generally uniform with no spotlights.
• There is only one key to each bedroom.
• There is no seating in the hall but the lounge is just off the hall where seating is available.
• We can offer you a familiarisation tour of the house as we do for all guests.
• The front door is single leaf side hung which provides 900mm width opening and quite heavy to open (it's the original Victorian door).
• There are no hand rails or grab rails in the hall.
• The hall is 1400mm wide and approximately 5 metres long.
• There is no lift to the upper first floor bedrooms.
• There is generally a colour contrast between the walls (generally light in colour) and the skirting boards (generally dark varnish).

Public Areas – Guest Lounge and Staircase

• The guest lounge and breakfast room have manual single leaf doors that are 850mm wide.
• We have a full fire alarm but no disabled access call buttons.
• The guest lounge and breakfast room are on the ground floor.
• The three bedrooms are on the first floor. There are no bedrooms on the ground floor.
• The guest lounge and breakfast room have polished wood floors with thick carpets in the centre of the rooms.
• We have no public telephones or other provisions such as induction loops.
• We have a staircase to the first floor which is 900mm wide. The steps are 250mm wide and 170 mm high, There are 9 steps to a quarter landing, then 2 steps to a further quarter landing, then 9 more steps to the first floor.
• The stairs are carpeted and reasonable well evenly lit.
• No special baby changing facilities are provided except that which is in a bathroom.
• There is a large hall to the first floor approximately 1500mm wide and 5m long.

Public Areas - WC – Ground Floor

• There are no public WC's except that which are to the first floor bathrooms/ensuites.
• There is a private WC on the ground floor available by prior arrangement.
• Mountbatten’s Cabin has twin single beds and an ensuite bathroom.
• Drake’s Cabin has twin single beds and private bathroom.
• Nelson’s Cabin has twin single beds and ensuite bathroom.

Breakfast Room

• Furniture is flexible and can be moved on request.
• The table has an underspace of 790mm wide by 600mm high and height of 740mm (legs on each corner).    Chairs can be moved to accommodate.

Shop

• This is available in the centre of the village, but please ask us for anything you may have forgotten to bring i.e. toothpaste etc. 

Laundry

• Service washes and drying can be arranged by prior arrangement.

Outdoor Facilities

• We have a level grassed area around the front and side of the house for guests use. This area overlooks Hadrian's Wall.
• Guests are welcome to walk around the garden but there are steep paths, sloping grassed areas and access is generally difficult.
• Access to see Hoot, our pet owl, is along a steeply sloping concrete or grassed path.

Conference & Meeting Rooms, Banqueting, Clubs, Entertainment

• Not Available

Bedrooms

• The first floor bedrooms are not suitable for wheelchair users.
• The fire alarm is audible only. The owners will alert guests/visitors in the event of emergency.
• The TV’s in the bedrooms have remote controls with small buttons.
• We have no Provisions or Aids.
• The flooring is fully carpeted.
• There is task lighting, ceiling lights and fireplace lights in each bedroom. None of this is dimmable as we use low energy lamps.
• All beds are singles of 900mm wide.
• Beds are 630mm high
• Walls are painted yellow in bedrooms with either dark varnished skirtings or white painted skirtings.
• Guest information can be printed large font by prior arrangement.
• There are no steps on the first floor.
• Tea /coffee is served to you or you can request a tray. Kettles are not cordless.
• There are no fridges in the bedrooms.
• Walls are generally light in colour with dark furniture.
• There is no room service for food in the bedrooms.
• We have non feather pillows available.
• We are non-smoking, and pet free in the bedrooms although we keep two dogs ourselves.

Bathroom, Shower-room & WC [Ensuite / Private]

• En Suite bathrooms are within the rooms.
• The private bathroom is adjacent to the bedroom.
• Fire alarm is audible only.
• Ensuites are 1200mm by 2300mm.
• The private bathroom is 1800mm by 2700mm.
• Floor surfaces are non slip vinyl.
• Doors to En Suite bathrooms are single leaf of 650mm width with lever handles.
• The door to the private bathroom is single leaf of 850mm width with round handles
• There are no support rails nor alarm system/pull cord .
• Shower trays are 1200mm long by 750mm wide with a door entry of 450mm and a 140mm high step. There are no grab rails.
• There is one shower head, with a thermostatic mixer, round taps which turn.
• The hand basins have no underspace or support rails.
• The pedestal wash basins have a square front.  They are 850mm high.    
• The WC’s to the En Suite bathrooms have left-side transfer with available space of 900mm. The toilet is 420mm high.
• The WC to the private bathroom has right-side transfer with available space of 900mm. The toilet is 420mm high.
• The WC’s have no seat adjuster, or raiser/support rails.
• All floors and walls are light in colour.
• We have no Provisions or Aids.

Additional Information

• You must advise us at the time of booking of any special dietary requirements you may have, otherwise, we may not be able to provide what you require.
• Assistance dogs are welcomed by arrangement.
• There is mobile phone reception generally at the front of the house only.
• We use the front door in the need of evacuation. We will alert residents personally if evacuation is needed.
• We are a no smoking building.
• We can accept small items of food/medication for storage in our fridge by arrangement.
